Focus on Mission ~ By Ray McKinnon

For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people."  -Luke 5: 9-10

There is a lot written about fear and why it has a tremendous hold over us.  In some cases, it cripples us from experiencing the wonders of life.  My wife will tell you, I am an adventurous person and I challenge myself to learn new things and experience new joys.  Ultimately, the reason most people seek out adventure tends to be quite personal.

Missionary work is personal and for me, adventuresome.  It requires me to get out of my comfort zone.  I have traveled to distant places to live and work among strangers who speak and look different than me.  The Bible tells us as Jesus said to Simon in Luke 5: 10, "Do not be afraid.  From now on you will be catching people."  I believe Jesus has called me to lead Missionary teams by "catching people" who have heard his calling.  I have seen first-hand the transformation of ordinary people doing extraordinary things on Mission trips in the name of Jesus.

One of my favorite quotes comes from the movie The Way.  It is "You don't choose a life, you live a life".  Perhaps the greatest joy that Jesus give us is in believing in him, we can live a life without fear.  When we choose to follow Jesus, we can experience the joys of the world.  The great comforter Jesus Christ is with us always.

The Gift of Our Lord Jesus~ By Bobbie Parsons

For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are yet without sin.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need. - Hebrews 4: 15-16

At this season of thanksgiving and of loving and gifting we can be grateful to our Father God for the gift of our Lord Jesus:  not only for Jesus' sacrifice of his life on the cross for our salvation but for Jesus; willingness to come to earth and live as a human being.  Because of that our Savior is able to understand intimately the temptations, hurts and stresses we experience and respond to us with sympathy and strength.

What a wonderful gift for us to be able to come to our God through Jesus and seek the help, strength, and guidance we need.  Thanks be to God.

Prayer:  Dear Lord, thank you for blessings us.  Help us to support each other as we serve you.  In Christ's name, we pray.  Amen.
