Powerful Peace~ By Wanda Bulkowski-Larsen
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. - John 14: 26-27
The first Bible verse that I memorized was John 14: 27. When I read it, I was stunned. I immediately got that Christ could give me peace, after all he was the Prince of it. But as I reread the passage, layers of meaning unfolded. Christ was not just offering me an abstract, general kind of peace, but He was giving me His peace. Who would willingly give away their peace to me? Jesus further describes His gift by saying that it is given not as the world gives. As a young person who was growing up in an unstable, often unsafe home environment, I had known little sense of security. This hit me hard. Christ was giving me peace and I could trust that he would not steal it or destroy it. He then follows this with words that met me through times of challenge: "Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid". When I now read this verse, I hear angel voices and glimpse the glory of God. May you receive this gift of freely given, never taken back, powerful peace.
