Church 301-662-1464 School 301-662-6783 office@calvaryumc.org

This morning in the Tuesday Bible study, we looked at Luke 11:27 -28.

A woman in the crowd listening to Jesus spoke up: “Happy is the mother who gave birth to you and nursed you.” But he said, “Happy rather are those who hear God’s word and put them into practice.” (Common English Bible)

I take this to mean that we are blessed by God when we make the decision not only to hear the Word of God but also to put our faith into concrete action. Faith is a matter of belief and also deeds.

In October 2019, volunteers from Calvary Church partnered with the organization “Rise Against Hunger” to package 10,000 nutritious meals to be shipped anywhere around the world where there is a food shortage or natural disaster.  We did this in 2018 also. With your help, we can do it again on Sunday, October 23. We will be holding a mission opportunity right here in our own Parish Hall between 9:00 AM and noon. The work is simple and can be done by anyone, but we need hands and willing hearts. All ages are welcome.  You can come and help out for just a few minutes or longer as you choose.

We hope you will plan to join us that morning. Please let us know you are coming by either registering online at http://events.riseagainsthunger.org/CUMCF1022 or by signing up at church this Sunday, October 9, or October 16.

It’s great to hear about those who went to Henderson Settlement in eastern Kentucky last week as a weeklong mission project sponsored by the church. But not everyone can take part in such a trip. Here is something we can do close to home and yet can have a real impact on others both near and far.

I also want to mention one way we can respond to the terrible damage done to life and property by the recent hurricanes Fiona and Ian. You can give to support recovery efforts through UMCOR by giving online at https://umcmission.org/ or by writing a check to Calvary United Methodist Church and indicate on the memo line: HURRICANE RELIEF.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Steve
