What do you mean we have church services on Christmas Day!
Yes, friends, this is one of those years when December 25 falls on a Sunday. When many families are rising to open presents and stockings, your pastor and music director will be at the church holding a worship service at 10:00 AM.
There are lots of churches that always hold worship services on Christmas day. Most notably, the Roman Catholics. For Catholics, December is a feast day, a holy day, and a time to gather for worship. And there are also some churches that make the decision to forgo the usual Sunday pattern in such years to make room for family time and the celebration of Christmas at home. Some churches put so much energy and resources into the Christmas eve services that there is little left for Christmas day when it falls on a Sunday.
The New York Times had an article this past Sunday that looked at what different churches were doing this year. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/18/us/christmas-church-service-protestants.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
As for Calvary United Methodist Church, we will be open for worship. There won’t be any Sunday School classes in the building, no donuts, coffee, or choir, and you may need to pick up your own bulletin that day. But we will have a wonderful time singing carols, hearing scripture lessons, and hearing some contemporary readings that help us take in the meaning of Christ’s entering into our world. Feel free to join us in person or find us on Facebook at watch us online.
And the following Sunday happens to be New Year’s Day. We will be having worship that day also, a great way to start off 2023. So, if you are up for it, we hope to see you that Sunday also!
Merry Christmas!
Pastor Steve
