Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB) Frederick County provides bags of nonperishable food to elementary school-aged children. These bags help feed children who qualify for free and reduced meals (FARM) at school. Without this program, many of these children would not have nutritious food to eat outside of school. They are currently giving 4,250 bags weekly during the school year. Now, they cannot serve all 15,000 students who qualify for FARM.
Calvary’s Youth has been working with Blessings in a Backpack since early 2023. The Youth have been helping at the BIAB headquarters to sort and inventory donated items. Both the Youth and Children’s Sunday School are collecting donations.
March 5th, Calvary’s Youth will host their 3rd BIAB packing event in the Parish Hall after the service. All members of the Congregation are invited to help pack a bag or write a note of encouragement. Volunteers will transport bins of prepared bags back to BIAB Headquarters after the event. They will then get delivered to the elementary schools in the coming weeks.
BIAB has blessed our congregation with an outlet to impact vulnerable children in our community positively. If you want to know more or are interested in volunteering, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Jenn Duthoy at calvaryyouth@calvaryumc.org.
