Welcoming Advent and a Shepherd Named “Bill”
Friends,
What a joy it was to step into the first week of Advent together. Lighting the candle of Hope always brings a sense of calm and possibility. It reminds us that God’s light often begins in small ways, a single flame shining gently into the early winter darkness, calling us to watch and wait with renewed expectation.
This Sunday also brought a wonderful moment of joy during Children’s Church as our kids named our Shepherd on the Search. After plenty of laughter and creativity, they gave him the name “Bill.” He has already begun appearing around Calvary, helping us enter the spirit of preparation as Christmas approaches. If you happen to see him tucked somewhere unexpected, let it encourage you to keep your own heart alert and ready for the Christ Child. You can learn more about this tradition at shepherdonthesearch.com.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for your generosity this season. Every Angel Tree ornament was taken, and all the gifts will return to the church by this Sunday, December 7. Your kindness will brighten Christmas for children in our community and remind them that they are seen and loved.
As we move deeper into December, we will begin collecting hygiene items for Frederick’s Student Homeless Initiative Partnership, known as SHIP. Items like soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, and feminine products may seem simple, yet they carry enormous dignity for students facing housing insecurity. I am grateful for a congregation that understands Christmas giving as something active, compassionate, and rooted in the heart of Christ.
Advent invites us to prepare not only our homes but also our spirits. “Bill” the Shepherd invites us into anticipation. The Angel Tree invites us into compassion. The SHIP collection invites us into love expressed through action. Together they shape us into a community that is ready to welcome Jesus with open hearts.
I am thankful to walk this sacred season with you, a people who embody hope in ways both quiet and profound.
Until Sunday, and all the days between,
Rev. Dr. Beth Hutton
