The Community Concert Series is presented by the Music and Arts Ministry of Calvary United Methodist Church. Support is provided through grants from The Frederick Arts Council, The Delaplaine Foundation, and The William Cross Foundation.
Most concerts are free and open to the public.

October 6, 2024- Brenda Portman, organist
Calvary UMC’s 2024-2025 Community Concert Series presents award-winning organist and composer Dr. Brenda Portman. Renowned for her technique, musicianship, and flawless performance ability, Dr. Portman will present a concert on Calvary UMC’s new 4-manual, 46 rank Cornel Zimmer pipe organ. She serves as the Resident Organist at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is also the Executive Director of the church’s renowned Organ Concert Series. She teaches organ instruction at Xavier University in Cincinnati. Dr. Portman has won numerous awards in national organ competitions and has collaborated with acclaimed Canadian composer Rachel Laurin.
November 3, 2024 – Salon Trio
Calvary UMC’s 2024-2025 Community Concert Series presents Salon Trio. Accomplished and award-winning musicians, the Salon Trio features clarinetist Robert DiLutis, saxophonist Noah Getz, and pianist Mary-Victoria Voutsas. Their program, “Influential Voices,” explores the often-neglected chamber music of Black composers who helped forge a path for future generations of musicians. The program will include works by William Grant Still, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Yusef Lateef.

January 12, 2025 – Marjory Serrano-Coyer, violinist and Dr. Hsin-Yi Chen, pianist
Calvary UMC’s 2024-2025 Community Concert Series presents Dr. Marjory Serrano-Coyer, violinist, and Dr. Hsin-Yi Chen, pianist, for an unforgettable musical journey called “Tranquil Turbulence: A Musical Odyssey.” Experience the charm and elegance of Salzburg with Mozart’s masterful Sonata No. 26 in B flat major. Then, immerse yourself in the vibrant, exotic rhythms and harmonies with a sonata by Venezuelan composer Angel Sauce. Finally, conclude the odyssey with the powerful and expressive Sonata in A major by French composer César Franck. This concert promises to showcase both technical mastery and emotional depth, delivering an afternoon of musical enchantment.
February 16, 2025 – Brian Ganz, pianist
Calvary UMC’s 2024-2025 Community Concert Series presents Brian Ganz, who returns for another “All-Chopin” program as he continues his quest to perform every work of music by the great composer. This concert is an interactive and highly energetic performance where Mr. Ganz brings Chopin’s music to life with emotional power and warmth.
March 9, 2025 – Brass of Peace
Sylvia Alimena, conductor
Calvary UMC’s 2024-2025 Community Concert Series presents Brass of Peace. An auditioned ensemble, it features 15 gifted high-school musicians who participate in a 36-week intensive training program preparing them for the competitive field of music. Through weekly sessions by conductor Sylvia Alimena, former second hornist of the National Symphony for 29 years, these students build individual and ensemble skills along with confidence in performing. Their programs include works ranging from Bach, Brahms, and Mendelssohn to Mahler and Copland.
April 13, 2025 – Anna Lapwood MBE, organist
Please note: This concert begins at 4:00 p.m., with seating beginning at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are required, see below for more details. Seating will be first-come, first-served at the direction of the ushers.
From the United Kingdom, international sensation and star Anna Lapwood MBE will present a mix of classical and contemporary organ favorites. Known for her passion to bring organ music to the masses with the goal of making it relevant and fun, Anna will delight and entertain as she engages all the colors and sounds of Calvary UMC’s new Cornel Zimmer pipe organ. Anna is an associate artist of the Royal Albert Hall (London) and holds the position of Director of Music at Pembroke College (Cambridge). She was awarded an Associateship of the Royal Academy of Music and the prestigious Gamechanger Award from the Royal Philharmonic Society in 2023. www.AnnaLapwood.co.uk
Due to demand and popularity, this event will require pre-paid tickets at a cost of $20 per person + online fees. Seating is limited and is expected to fill to capacity.

May 4, 2025 – Mendelssohn Piano Trio
Calvary UMC’s 2024-2025 Community Concert Series presents the Mendelssohn Piano Trio. Since its founding in 1997, they have performed over 500 concerts in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The Trio – Peter Sirotin, violinist, Fiona Thompson, cellist, and Ya-Ting Chang, pianist – embrace an extensive repertoire of over 100 works of music from all periods of the genre’s history. Their program “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” explores the tension between tradition and innovation in music by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and Korngold.
