In our ongoing series on the stained glass windows in the sanctuary, we’ve come to the window that shows Jesus feeding the multitude. This scene is found in all four gospels (Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:31-44; Luke 9:12-17 and John 6:1-14).
The day was getting on the disciples were concerned that the people will want something to eat. The disciples are certain that they have no way to feed them. The disciples saw the moment as a crisis of scarcity. They went to Jesus with the hope and expectation that he could send the people away and fix the problem. However, Jesus does not see scarcity in this situation. He directed the disciples to look at what food they had at their disposal. They it they have to Jesus who takes it, blesses it and gives it to the disciples to distribute to the people. Suddenly, what the disciples saw as scarcity turns out to be abundance.
In our window, we see a man and a woman, a child and youth receiving bread and fish received from the hands of Jesus Christ. He feeds them and they look upon him with wonder and worship.
This is a story that invites us to look at our own situation. Where are those places that we feel our resources are too little and the demands too great? Our time? Our finances? Our patience? Jesus invites us to look at what resources we have with a new eye and a fresh perspective. Then we can offer what we have to God. Put what we have in the hands of Christ and see if what seemed paltry and insufficient can actually become sufficient to meet the need.
I’ve seen this is in lots of places, but I still need to stop and remember its true. May you find that whatever situation you face, you look to see what resources you hold, give them to Christ and receive the abundant grace God has to share.
