Between Sundays – Laity Sunday
This Sunday is Laity Sunday, and I hope you’ll be in worship to cheer on some of our own.
Karen Gebhart and David Cline will be leading us, and I’m so grateful to both of them for saying yes. Planning and leading a worship service takes a lot of time, prayer, and courage, and they’ve given all three. I’ll be at the beach this weekend with my mom, and I can’t think of better hands to leave our pulpit in.
So, let’s fill the pews for them. Come sing loud, laugh at the jokes, and greet them afterward. Bring a friend if you can. There’s nothing quite like looking out from up front and seeing a room full of people who showed up for you.
Laity Sunday is also a good reminder of something that’s true every week at Calvary. The church runs on the gifts of its people. Our Methodist tradition has always believed that ministry belongs to all of us, not just the folks with a stole around their neck. Every committee member, Sunday school teacher, usher, greeter, choir member, kitchen volunteer, and Trustee is living out that calling, most of the time without anyone noticing.
So, this Sunday, let’s notice. And if you’ve ever wondered whether you have something to offer, Karen and David are proof that God uses all kinds of gifts, maybe even yours.
That’s exactly why Karen is leading our new Connecting at Calvary initiative, Find Your Place at Calvary. Maybe you’d like to get more involved but aren’t sure where to start. Maybe you’re curious about a particular ministry, or you have a gift, a passion, or an idea you’d love to share with our leadership team. Look for Karen at the front of the sanctuary after worship on Sunday, November 1. Or don’t wait, catch Karen or David in the Parish Hall after worship this Sunday. You can also grab a copy of our Ministry Catalog, linked HERE, to explore the many ways to get involved. Karen would love to listen, answer your questions, and help you find the place where your gifts and God’s work at Calvary meet. Whether you’re brand new or have been part of this community for decades, there’s always a next step we can take together.
See you Sunday, I’ll be watching and taking attendance 😉 .
Until Sunday, and all the days between,
Dr. Hutton
