Oftentimes, the challenges of a big issue such as caring for the environment seem overwhelming. Where do we start? What can we do? The best thing is to start somewhere and to do what you can.
There was a recent meeting of the church “Green Team” where we considered ways that we could promote caring for the environment right here in our own congregation. The group decided to set up different work groups to investigate specific aspects of this work. I am excited to share what we will be doing and invite your comments and participation.
- Energy audit to review the church facilities for ways to save energy. This will involve lighting, insulation, HVAC systems, and building use.
- Communication and Education. Provide tips and learning opportunities about how to care for creation both as a congregation and in our homes and workplaces.
- Advocacy and Action. Promote participation in green and environmentally sound projects in Frederick County. This might include hands-on projects such as tree planting, rain barrels, or gardening. Also, work with other environmental nonprofits to promote environmentally sound legislation and initiatives.
- Solar Energy. Research options for installing solar power system on the roof of the Education Center and share information about home solar power options and rebates.
If you are interested in one of these areas, I would be happy to help make the connection.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Steve
